Coughs, Cold & Flu

When winter arrives many of us are filled with excitement and joy that the festive season is upon us, but it won't be that festive if you are spending that time in your sickbed.

At Peak Pharmacy Online we pride ourselves in offering a range of products to help you battle the cold and flu season, but as a family run business we care about our customers, so here are a range of tips and hints to help you and family stay well over the winter period.

The Symptoms:

The common cold, including chesty cold, head cold and seasonal flu are caused by viral infections that are spread from one person to another. This normally happens by touching a surface that is contaminated with cold germs, such as a keyboard, doorknob, phone etc, and then touching your nose or mouth, these germs then attach to the linings of your nose and throat. Normal symptoms will last for around 7 days as the body fights off the infection, however, colds in younger children can last for up to 2 weeks.

The common symptoms to look out for are:

  • Headache
  • Coughing
  • Blocked nose
  • A slight or moderate temperature
  • Sneezing
  • Sore and/or scratchy throat
  • Feeling run down

The above symptoms can usually be self-medicated with over the counted medicines rather than needing to visit your GP. However, if it is advisable to take a trip to your GP if your symptoms are still around after 3 weeks if you have a fever of 39°C or above, you have chest pains, breathing difficulties, are coughing up blood-stained phlegm or have severe swelling of the glands.

Look After Yourself:

It is important to increase fluid intake and have plenty of rest. Dry cough syrup will help calm a cough and paracetamol or aspirin will help reduce fever and muscle aches and pains. If symptoms are still active after a week, then consult your doctor. If you start to feel any of the above symptoms there are products out there which can help fight the infection before it manifests any further.

Vicks First Defence is designed to stop a cold in its tracks and is clinically proven to stop a cold when the first signs of a cold are felt. It is a micro-gel nasal spray that helps fight the cold germs before they can take hold. Unlike many medicines that only relieve symptoms, Vicks First Defence targets the back of the nose where the virus starts to develop. This spray helps your body naturally remove the cold virus before it develops into a full common cold.

There are things you can do throughout the winter months, and all year round, to help reduce the likelihood of coming down with cold or flu.

  • Drink plenty of water. Always keep hydrated
  • Regular exercise
  • A balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables
  • Avoid stress when possible
  • A regular sleeping pattern

All these factors help to build a healthy immune system which will help fight off cold and flu symptoms.

There will be times that even with the factors above that you may succumb to illness. Germs are the key component to picking up an illness is most cases and sometimes even the most prepared of us cannot escape this.

There are extra precautions you can undertake, however, to help keep your body protected:

  • Always wash your hands. Keeping your hands clean and germ-free plays a large part in staying cold free
  • Always have a tissue on you to help clear your nose. A travel hand gel is useful to clean your hands afterwards and during your day
  • At a keyboard all day? Always make sure to clean your workspace to stop the build-up of germs and bacteria
  • If your child is going to school, let them know the importance of washing their hands and preventing coming in to contact with germs

Stock Up For Winter:

The best possible way to help prepare yourself and your family for cold and flu season is to stock up your medicine cabinet!

Think about who you are buying for and what you will need. If you have children, look at "children only" medicines which may be useful, as some medications may not be suitable for children. Always research the medication you are buying thoroughly and always read the label. Most people only think about buying for when they are sick, so Lemsip , Vicks and Benylin are the usual suspects when it comes to the helpful treatment of coughs, cold and flu.

Why not think about preventative measures as well?

Stocking up on vitamins & supplements is always useful so that throughout the winter months you and your family can keep on top of your vitamin and mineral levels to help fight off and take during illness. Painkillers such as ibuprofen, aspirin and paracetamol are always useful to help treat symptoms of cold and flu. One thing to always remember is a lot of cold and flu remedies already contain these so always ensure you read the label and know what you are taking. Never over-medicate yourself, it will not get you better any faster and in most cases can cause serious risks to your health.
