Paludrine/Avloclor Travel Pack is licenced for the prevention of malaria in travellers. It contains the ingredients Proguanil and Chloroquine. As this product contains Chloroquine it is not suitable for use in regions of the world where there is widespread resistance.

Not all antimalarial tablets are created equal. Unfortunately just like antibiotics resistance has developed in malaria parasites. This means that this product and any others containing Chloroquine are only suitable for select areas of the world. For up to date guidance please see FitForTravel or TravelHealthPro.

This antimalarial medication is not suitable for use in the following areas:

South-East Asia and Indonesia

Amazon - South America

If travelling to these areas you may wish to consider using Malarone, Maloff Protect, or Doxycycline.

This travel pack contains 2 types of tablet. Proguanil Hydrochloride 100mg is known as Paludrine and Chloroquine Phosphate 250mg known as Avloclor. The tablets are presented in a special calendar blister pack so you know exactly what tablets to take on what day.

Each pack contains eight strips of antimalaria preventative treatment. One strip corresponds to one week (for adults) and so one box will provide effective treatment for a 2 week holiday for one adult.

In Adults (over 45kg) the dose is as follows:

2 x Proguanil 100mg tablets daily as a single dose

2 x Chloroquine 250mg tablets weekly as a single dose

They should be started one week before entering the malaria region, whilst there and for four weeks leaving.

For children (under 45kg), the dose is decided by weight.  Please call us for further information to help you place an order online.

How to Take

The tablets should be swallowed whole with a drink of water, after food. If you find it difficult to swallow tablets they can be crushed and mixed with milk, honey or jam. Beware these malaria tablets have a film coating to mask their bitter taste. Crushing or breaking the tablets will make them taste very bitter.

Who Can't Take It?

Do not use this product if you suffer from the following conditions:

Allergic to any of the ingredients

Using Amiodarone for heart rhythm control.

Caution should be exercised in all patients with cardiac disorders

History of epilepsy

Kidney or liver disease

Psoriasis - It can make it worse.

Myasthenia Gravis

G6PD deficiency (a blood problem)

Or use the following medicines:

If you have any questions about these tablets please read the patient information leaflet and then speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

It is extremely important to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes as the more bites you get the greater the risk of being bitten by an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes carry more than just malaria, which is why it is really important to make sure you observe good bite avoidance. Please read our article on bite avoidance and you may want to stock up on bug sprays and other items like smoke coils to help reduce your risk.

Travelpharm would recommend all travellers who return from malaria regions, who develop a fever within 12 months of their return visit their doctor to exclude the possibility of tropical illness like malaria.
